Met gala 2023 – bäst och sämst klädd på röda mattan

The MET Gala 2023 – Best and Worst celeb fashion

The Met Gala, also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising event for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. Each year, a different theme is chosen to inspire the attendees’ fashion choices, and in 2023, the theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” as a tribute to the iconic fashion designer who passed away in 2019. While some took inspiration from Lagerfeld’s classic designs, others opted for a more fun approach.

The MET Gala this year had even more of a buzz around it than usual due to the rumours of a special VIP guest – Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat Choupette. Despite not attending the Gala in the end, the well-known cat, who lives a life of luxury, did pay tribute to her late human father on Instagram, writing: ” Many people invited me to walk the red carpet of the Met Gala 2023 in tribute to Daddy, but we preferred to stay cosy and at home. We pay tribute to my Daddy every day since his parting and we are very moved to see one more day dedicated to him”.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the best and worst looks from the 2023 MET Gala – but remember, fashion is objective and personal, and the MET Gala is the perfect way to express creativity and take risks.

Best Looks From the MET Gala

Dua Lipa in Chanel

Dua Lipa dazzled in a vintage Chanel gown that radiated opulence. The white dress had a long skirt with pockets, a corset-style bodice with a low neckline, and tassels at the hem. The late Karl Lagerfeld initially created the outfit for Chanel’s 1992 fall/winter collection. Lipa’s attire honoured the illustrious fashion designer while also exhibiting her own distinctive flair and grace. The singer ensured that she was the centre of attention as she walked the Met Gala red carpet in her gorgeous gown fit for a queen – a true show-stopper!

Anne Hathaway in Atelier Versace

The actress wore a white dress with a daring split that was embellished with gold paper clip-shaped sequins. It’s a delightfully sensual, vintage outfit that’s meant to turn heads while also being a surprisingly clever mix of the classic Versace safety pin dress and the iconic Chanel tweed. She had her hair pulled back in a half ponytail, carried a similar jacket, and accessorised with a silver necklace – a beautiful combination.

Rihanna in Valentino

Rihanna is known for her show-stopping looks and this year’s MET Gala design by Valentino is no different. The pregnant beauty wore a custom stunning white dress design – channelling Lagerfeld’s favourite shade, and sleek silhouettes. The dress was paired beautifully with a white cape, that she draped across her shoulders elegantly.  The cape itself was made out of 500 individual silk petals, sewn together to form 30 beautiful camellia flowers. She initially used the cape to cover her dress before unveiling it on the red carpet, where she posed with partner A$AP Rocky. She may have been one of the last on the red carpet, but she was certainly worth the wait.

Naomi Campbell in Chanel

Famous supermodel Naomi Campbell worked with Karl Lagerfeld many times in her career, and she honoured him perfectly at the MET Gala by wearing a stunning Chanel dress that Lagerfeld himself had designed. This timeless piece from 2010 combined draped pink satin with silver details for a Grecian-style look that will never go out of style.

Doja Cat in Oscar de la Renta

Karl Lagerfeld’s affinity for cats was acknowledged in Doja Cat’s Met Gala 2023 ensemble. She wore a silver Oscar De La Renta garment that was bejewelled and embellished, as well as fake cat ears and a human face. The ensemble paid humorous and original homage to Lagerfeld’s love of cats, while still thinking about fashion. Her distinctive and striking outfit was a big hit during the event overall – as was her interesting interview – MEOW!

Some of our other favourite looks included:

  • Bad Bunny
  • Florence Pugh
  • Jenna Ortega

Worst Looks From the MET Gala

Jared Leto
One of the biggest shocks in MET Gala history is when Jared Leto hit the red carpet dressed AS Karl Lagerfeld’s cat, not just taking inspiration from it. The costume was almost like a football mascot, or theme park character, rather than a boundary breaking fashion look. We can certainly say we have NEVER seen anything like this on the red carpet before.

Kim Kardashian in Schiaparelli

Kim Kardashian always hits the headlines for her fashion choices – whether they are good or bad. During last year’s MET Gala, she controversially wore the actual dress that Marilyn Monroe wore when singing Happy Birthday to the President. This year, however, her look was a little underwhelming and simplistic compared to her other fashion choices. The outfit seemed more like an advertisement for her SKIMS brand, than a tribute to Lagerfeld.

Kendall Jenner in Marc Jacobs

While she kept with Lagerfeld’s famous white and black colour scheme, Kim’s sister Kendall also failed to hit the mark this year. This is mainly due to the fact that her outfit seemed more like a costume than an actual garment because of the perplexing mix of ideas, including showgirl, circus performer, and magician. Don’t get us wrong, it fits her perfectly and she looks great all the time, but we feel like she misses the point of the theme.

Is the Met Gala invite-only?

The Met Gala, in contrast to other charity events, only lets invited guests attend. This is one of the most eagerly awaited events of the year, and there are even waiting lists to receive these invites. Anna Wintour, the Vogue editor-in-chief, is in charge of curating the guest list, which tends to include inspirational figures from fashion, music, film, politicians and business.

Who is not allowed at the Met Gala?

Celebrities under the age of 18 are no longer permitted at the Met Gala as of 2018. The Gala itself is invite-only and is the stuff many celebs dream of.

Why was the Met Gala established?

Eleanor Lambert founded the Met Gala in 1948 to collect money for the Costume Institute and to commemorate the institute’s annual show.

The Take Away

The MET Gala is a place where you can truly explore fashion and wear looks that you couldn’t wear anywhere else, and this year was no exception! We loved that many of the looks focused around the tweed and black and white shades that Karl Lagerfeld was so famous for. Never in a million years could we predict that we would see a human-sized CAT on the carpet this year, but that’s the beauty of the MET – you never really know what to expect.
