How to find the perfect engagement ring

There are so many things to consider when you are buying an engagement ring. Will the other person like it? Is this the right stone? Is it the right metal? Is it the right style? It can be a huge hassle trying to find what you think is the right engagement ring. Without knowing exactly what the other person thinks of it.

Then there is also the doubt that looms in the back of your mind… Will the answer be yes? Or have I just spent all this time and money to get rejected? Well that we can assure that it is unlikely. However, this can be a very busy time, and there are still more questions that you are asking yourself. Which day should I choose? Christmas, New Year’s, and Valentine’s day tend to be the most common days to propose. So you can follow the trend or try to be original, and choose a date that has a special meaning to both of you.

With those questions out of the way we can now focus on the most important part, choosing the ring. Let me tell you that you do not have to be a jeweler to choose the perfect ring, nor do you need to know anything about jewelry. All you have to do is pay attention to your other half’s taste, and style. Combine that with the guide that we have, and you will certainly find the most amazing engagement ring. An engagement ring is more than just a ring. It stands as a symbol of love, commitment, mutual respect, and an everlasting relationship. So keep that in mind as we go through the most important aspects you should consider before popping the question!

Find the perfect engagement ring

Let’s start with the basics, first you need to define a budget. Choose an amount that you are able to spend, without putting yourself in financial trouble. Although this is not the time to be a cheapskate, you don’t have to mortgage your house to buy the perfect engagement ring. Depending on the people the most important aspect of buying an engagement ring is not how much you spent on it.

You should try to focus on getting the best quality ring for your budget, that will be according to the other person’s taste. Remember that for nearly every budget you will always be able to find a high quality engagement ring. More than focusing on the price, try to focus on getting the best possible wedding ring for the money. Try instead to focus on the best bang for your buck.

Look up engagement rings online

With that out of the way, now we start our quest to find the perfect engagement ring. If you are not experienced in this type of thing, or you can’t tell the difference between a ring and an earring, as some men can’t, the best step is to look online. Try to get a feel for what kind of designs are available and are commonly used. This should give you a much better idea of the job that lies ahead. Try to think how the other person would feel with a particular design, and different materials. Once you have done this, you will now be able to know where to look. This way we can put aside some designs, and materials that will not work out.

Know what the person likes

This is perhaps one of the biggest challenges, because it involves lots of guess-work. Thankfully you have people on your side. Consult with close friends, and try to ask for their advice. This gives you more insight into what the other person likes. Check the jewelry that they wear, and try to see what sort of style and design they would like. Doing these things will help you along this treacherous road.

Book A Consultation

Once you have a good idea of different designs and styles to look for, book a consultation at a jewelry shop. This allows you to see the designs you saw online in person. Although we are too dependent on the internet, some things are better in person. Engagement rings due to their small size, can really have a different look in person, than in zoomed in pictures. The same happens with the different metals, and stones. Make sure you at least visit a jewelry store once to get an in person feel for what you are looking for.

At this point you should have a better idea of what kind of engagement rings you are looking for. This is where the fun starts, we divide this process into 2 steps: Choosing the style and choosing the materials. Within these 2 steps are some important things to notice, and I will guide you through all of them, one by one.

Choosing the style of the engagement ring

This is easier said than done, however by now you should have a good idea of what kind of style and design your other half likes. There are still some points we should consider, so that we can narrow down the number of engagement rings you should be considering.

Unique design or common and traditional

This really comes down to personality. Some people prefer to have eccentric and unique accessories, including engagement rings. Others prefer something with more traditional lines, that is more common. This is something you have to consider early on, and make your final choice based on this. If your other half is somewhat eccentric and likes very distinctive and unique things, you might even want to consider a custom ring. Although this requires a larger budget, you may want to contact a jewelry designer that can help you design the most special and unique engagement ring.

Avoid trends

You may want to avoid some trends of the times that might fade away after a few years. This is because some designs tend to be popular for 5 years or so, and then they go away forever. Whether you are choosing something exotic, or more traditional, you want to make sure that the engagement ring you buy is a timeless piece of jewelry that will always be elegant.

Although we will cover in much more detail all of the materials of the engagement ring, you should consider the colours when choosing the style. Some people dislike the yellow tone of gold, and some dislike the metallic colour of platinum, and white gold. Make sure you know what your partner likes. From the colour of the metal, to the colour of the diamond, this should be decided before we move on to the next phase.

Choosing the materials

This is where it gets extremely tricky. Especially for those of us who are not familiar with precious metals, stones, and rings overall. Do not worry I got your back. I will walk you through all of the points you should consider when you buy an engagement ring.

Choosing the right diamond

Diamonds have different characteristics, and choosing the perfect depends on a few factors. Here are the most important factors to consider when choosing your diamond:

Cuts or Shape

As long as you know the style of ring you are looking for this step will be much easier. Let’s go through the different shapes to see what will be better for your partner.

  • Round – this is the most common and traditional shape. It is a classic cut that can work wonderfully on its one, or can be combined. It is common for engagement rings to have several round shaped diamonds. You can’t go wrong with a round shaped diamond.
  • Oval – Oval is also a very traditional cut, although it is more eccentric, it is still elegant. The oval shaped diamond is incredibly stunning if your partner has longer fingers.
  • Princess – the princess cut is also extremely popular. Its pyramidal design makes the diamond look larger than it actually is. Although it is a little more modern cut, it is still timeless.
  • Cushion – The cushion cut gets its name from its similarity with cushions. It is a more exotic cut that is also elegant and traditional at the same time. Although they were first introduced in the 18th century, their popularity has been growing in the last few years. It is a mix between a square and rounded shape.
  • Emerald – This cut is named after the similarity between emerald cuts. It is a landmark of the Art Deco period, and irradiates the diamond’s clarity. The design works particularly well with short fingers, as it makes them look longer.
  • Marquise – The marquise shape is similar to the oval shape, although it has different straight edges. Due to its long shape it favors those who have long fingers. It can be a very unordinary choice that will certainly catch other people’s attention.
  • Pear – The pear cut is among the most traditional. Although it has lost some popularity in recent times it still remains one of the most iconic diamond shapes. Its shape helps it appear larger than what it actually is. It also looks extremely delicate and elegant.
  • Asscher – This another iconic shape from the Art Deco period. It is perhaps one of the most exotic and fashionable cuts. It has remained extremely popular since it was initially created.

Although there are some more diamond cuts that are well known, these are certainly my favorites. They are guaranteed to make your partner happy, and content. But choosing the diamond is not all about the shape or cut. There is more to it.

How many times have we said that size does not matter? Well it kinda does matter, at least when it comes to diamonds. One of the reasons I initially mentioned the shapes and cuts is because some shapes actually look bigger than what they are. The size of the diamond will always be reflected on its price.

The diamond size is measured in carats, or its weight. Although some diamonds may have more carats, the way it looks on the finger makes a huge difference that you should consider when choosing the right engagement ring.

Diamonds have different colours that affect how they glow. The most sought-after diamonds tend to not have any colors at all. This allows them to reflect light perfectly. However a recent trend that has become increasingly popular are coloured diamonds. They can be yellow, or pink and even some darker colours. If you do choose to go with an exotic color make sure your other half would like that, because it is not a very common thing, but it can be an unique engagement ring.

Not every diamond is perfect and some of them actually have several flaws. In a way they are just like people, none are perfect and all of us have some flaws that make us who we are. You

Know where the stone comes from The less flaws a diamond has, the higher its price will be, so keep that in mind.

Choosing the metal

When it comes to metal, rest assured that there are not that many options. However, some important things should be addressed. The most traditional metal used in engagement rings is gold. Gold can be yellow or white gold that has a silver color. Recently rose gold has also become very popular. This distinctive colour is the combination of gold, silver and copper that gives it its pink tonality. You can choose between the three colours depending on what your partner would like the most.

There are also some other metals you might want to consider. They are certainly more exotic, but it can be an interesting choice if you are looking for something more unique, namely platinum and palladium. Both these metals are also common choices for engagement rings, and it all boils down to what you think your partner would like.

There are two important aspects when it comes to choosing the right metal. The first one is the carats, and the second one is plating.

Carats in gold define how pure the gold is. They vary according to the purity, with 24k being 100% gold.

  • 9k – 37.5% gold
  • 10k – 41.66%
  • 14k – 58.33%
  • 18k – 75%
  • 22k – 91.66%
  • 24k – 100%

This is important to keep in mind because similar rings of the same weight of different carats should have very different prices due to their gold content being different. Remember this and always ask your jewler how many gold carats the ring you are interested in has.

Finally we should also mention gold plating. Gold plating is an extremely common practice that allows jewelry that has a very small percentage of gold, to be sold in masses. This is very common, and although some of the gold plated rings can be wonderful, their value is very low. Because they are made of cheap materials, and have a very very thin coating of the precious metal. Keep that in mind when you are choosing the metal.

Other things to keep in mind

Although we have covered some of the most important aspects of choosing the perfect engagement ring, there are still some things you need to consider before you decide.

Make sure the size is perfect

Making sure the size is perfect can be a complicated part of the procedure. However there are ways to go around that. Remember that jewelers are always able to adjust the size of the ring, but you want to make sure you choose the right size at the first try. I have a little special trick for this that involves some naughty behaviour. However I am gonna share it with you, but I hope you keep it to yourself.

When your partner is distracted, or away from home, take one of their rings. But you need to make sure the ring you take is worn on the same finger as the wedding ring will be. Make sure it fits on the 4th finger of the left hand. You can even play around with a finger, while you distract your partner to see if the ring fits perfectly. Once you have the ring in your possession hurry, I mean hurry hurry! Get yourself to the nearest jewelry store, and ask someone there to measure the ring. Jewelers have ring measurement tools that can tell the exact size of each ring. Make sure you write the size down, and hurry back home in order to avoid any suspicion. This is the simplest way to get your partner’s ring size without them ever suspecting that you are going to propose, you just have to be fast, and have good timing.

Where to shop

Once you decide on the exact ring or design you want, you are probably wondering where to shop. Well today there are all sorts of options. You can always do the traditional way and go to your local jewelry shop. If your budget is tight and you can get a better price online, you can consider that. There is also another option that tends to be popular among vintage items aficionados – Vintage shops. Some people actually prefer vintage engagement rings, and you can also find these online and in several shops. However, it is not for everyone. Remember these things before you finally pull the trigger:

  • Ask if the shop accepts trades. Although this is uncommon, and some people will be too ashamed to ask for it, some couples actually exchange their engagement rings after the proposal. If you won’t take it personally it might be a good option to look for a shop that allows you to exchange your engagement ring for another, if your partner is not happy with your choice.
  • Make sure the ring comes with a warranty, and consider insuring it. The warranty can be a great plus, and insurance can protect you if god forbids something goes wrong.
  • Make sure your diamond comes with a certificate. In this day and age there are so many fakes out there, and diamonds are certainly the norm and not the exception. You can always ask a local jewelry shop to verify if the diamond you purchased is real.

Well there is not much more that I can do for you at this point. You have the ring, you have the reason, you just need to go out there and pop the question. Try to not be nervous, and make sure you don’t lose that engagement ring after so much work looking for the perfect one.

Whether you choose an original way to propose, by kneeling down or a weird, and funny way, I want to wish you all the best in your married life from the bottom of my heart. Finding the perfect engagement ring is something everyone can do, however finding true love and the perfect person to be by your side is a lot more difficult. Remember that you have accomplished the most difficult part, and you just have to ask a simple question – Yes or No?

Love M

Make sure you are getting your diamond from a reputable source. Some children, particularly in Africa, are relentlessly used as slaves to diamond mines. You want to make sure that your diamond comes from a reputable source that does not engage in this kind of illegal activity.
